Growing Together in One Family
At St John's Church of England Primary School, we are committed to preparing our children to become responsible, respectful and active citizens who can make a positive contribution to modern Britain. British Values are an important part of our curriculum and daily school life, reflecting both our Christian vision of "Growing Together in One Family" and our values of Love, Friendship, Honesty, Respect and Forgiveness.
As a Church of England school, we believe that British Values and Christian values work together to help children develop into compassionate, confident and responsible members of society.
What Are British Values?
Democracy
Democracy means that everyone has a voice and that people's views are listened to and respected.
The Rule of Law
The Rule of Law helps us understand the importance of rules, laws and responsibilities in keeping people safe and ensuring fairness.
Individual Liberty
Individual Liberty means having the freedom to make choices and express opinions while understanding the importance of responsibility and respect for others.
Mutual Respect
Mutual Respect means treating others as we would wish to be treated ourselves, valuing differences and recognising the worth of every individual.
Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs
This involves understanding, respecting and celebrating the diversity of faiths, cultures and beliefs found within our local community and wider world.
How We Promote British Values at St John's
Democracy
Children are encouraged to share their views and contribute to decision-making throughout school life.
We do this through:
- Pupil leadership groups
- Pupil voice activities
- Voting for school representatives
- Class discussions and debates
- Opportunities to influence school improvement
Children learn that their opinions matter and that everyone has a responsibility to listen respectfully to the views of others.
The Rule of Law
Our school values and behaviour expectations help children understand the importance of rules and responsibilities.

- Fairness and justice
- Making positive choices
- Keeping themselves and others safe
Through restorative approaches and our Christian value of forgiveness, children learn how to resolve conflict, take responsibility for their actions and rebuild relationships.
Individual Liberty
We encourage children to be confident, independent learners who are able to make informed choices.
Children are given opportunities to:
- Express their opinions and beliefs
- Develop independence
- Take on leadership responsibilities
- Explore their interests and talents
- Reflect on their own values and aspirations
We help children understand that freedom comes with responsibility and that their choices can have an impact on others.
Mutual Respect
Respect is one of our core Christian values and lies at the heart of everything we do.
Children learn to:

- Listen carefully to differing viewpoints
- Show kindness and empathy
- Work cooperatively with others

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
As a Church of England school, we are proud of our Christian foundation whilst also valuing and respecting people from all faiths and backgrounds.
Through Religious Education, Collective Worship and the wider curriculum, children:
