Our curriculum and Intent
Religious Education (RE) is a core part of life at St John’s Church of England Primary School and contributes significantly to our vision of “Growing Together in One Family.” As a Church of England school, we believe that RE enables children to develop spiritually, academically, morally and socially by exploring Christianity and a range of other faiths and worldviews. Through high-quality teaching and learning, pupils are encouraged to ask questions, think deeply, reflect thoughtfully and develop respect for the beliefs and experiences of others.
Following the Leeds Diocese Syllabus for Religious Education, our curriculum provides a rigorous and engaging programme of study that develops religious literacy and theological understanding. Children learn about Christianity as a living faith while also exploring the beliefs, practices and traditions of other world religions and worldviews. This enables pupils to develop knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the diverse society in which they live.
At St John’s, RE is taught as an academic subject that encourages enquiry, discussion and critical thinking. Children are given opportunities to explore life's big questions, consider different perspectives and make connections between faith, beliefs and daily life. Through this learning, pupils develop the confidence to express their own views while listening respectfully to the views of others.
Our RE curriculum is underpinned by our Christian values of Love, Friendship, Honesty, Respect and Forgiveness. It supports children in recognising how beliefs and values can influence actions and decisions, inspiring them to become compassionate, responsible and reflective members of society. Through RE, we aim to nurture curious learners who are equipped to flourish in a diverse and changing world, living out our vision of growing together in one family.

Right to withdraw

Parents have the right to request that the pupil be withdrawn from all or part of the RE provided. We ask that any requests are made in writing FAO Mrs Grindley. These requests can be sent to office@stjohnsji.co.uk

There is no requirement to provide reasons for the request but we would appreciate the opportunity to discuss the RE curriculum and arrangements for the withdrawal with parents.

We will review such a request each year, in discussion with parents.

The right of withdrawal does not extend to other areas of the curriculum when, as may happen on occasion, spontaneous questions on religious matters are raised by pupils or there are issues related to religion that arise in other subjects such as history or citizenship
What does R.E. look like at St John's
At St John’s, Religious Education is a highly valued and engaging subject that supports our vision of “Growing Together in One Family.” Through RE, children are encouraged to explore faith, beliefs and values in a safe, respectful and inclusive environment, helping them to develop as thoughtful, compassionate and informed members of society.
RE is taught as an academic subject, where children are encouraged to ask questions, think critically and engage with challenging ideas. Lessons provide opportunities for pupils to investigate religious beliefs and practices, explore different viewpoints and develop their own understanding of the world around them. Children learn that there are often different answers to life's big questions and are encouraged to reflect carefully and respectfully on these.
Through our RE curriculum, children gain an understanding of what it means to be a person of faith in the world today. They learn about the beliefs, traditions and practices of Christianity, as well as other major world religions and worldviews. This helps them to appreciate diversity, challenge stereotypes and develop respect for people whose beliefs and experiences may differ from their own.
RE also provides opportunities for children to encounter and explore the Christian values that are central to our school community. Through learning about faith in action, children are encouraged to consider how values such as Love, Friendship, Honesty, Respect and Forgiveness can influence the choices they make and the way they treat others.
RE at St John’s goes beyond learning about religion; it supports children in reflecting on their own beliefs, experiences and values. Through discussion, enquiry and deeper thinking, pupils are encouraged to recognise the principles and values that guide people's lives and to consider how they can make a positive difference in their communities and the wider world.
By exploring Christianity alongside a range of religions and worldviews, children develop knowledge, understanding, empathy and respect. We aim for every child to leave St John’s with the confidence to engage thoughtfully with different beliefs and perspectives, equipped to flourish in an increasingly diverse and interconnected world, as they continue Growing Together in One Family.
